Air crash in Jomsom claims 15 lives

It is with great sadness that we record the tragic death of 15 passengers in a crash of an Agni Air flight in the Marpha Village Development Committee (VDC) area near the airport of Jomsom in the lower Mustang District, at about 9.35 a.m. on 14 May, 2012.  The German-made Dornier craft had left Pokhara some 18 minutes earlier.

Those who died included 13 Indian nationals who were on a pilgrimage to Muktinath, as well as the pilot and the co-pilot.  The survivors, including two Danish nationals, were promptly rescued by men of the Nepali Army, police and locals, and evacuated by air to Pokhara.

According to reliable sources, the pilot had reported a minor malfunction in the plane and decided to return to Pokhara but while making a wide swing, crashed into a hillside some 500 meters from the Jomsom airport.Among those killed was a 14-year old teenage film star of Indian movies who was on the trip with her mother and sister.
