Makalu Base Camp Trek

Leaving the great eastern Arun River Valley, follow the Barun River north-west through dramatic highlands and remote villages and across a pass named after British explorer Eric Shipton, you finally reach the Makalu Base Camp below Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), the world’s fifth highest mountain.  George Mallory (who died on the slopes of Everest in 1923) wrote to his wife in 1921: “The whole range of peaks from Makalu to Everest exceeds any mountain scenery that ever I saw before.”  And Mallory knew mountains!
