Mountain Legend Pvt. Ltd., est.in 2009, is run by trekking veterans who learnt their trade under Colonel Jim Roberts, ex-British Gurkhas, founder of Nepal’s first recognized trekking outfit, Mountain Travel, for hard-hiking discovery of high hills, mountains, the unique culture of the people of pristine villages and travelling through a land which is home to eight of the highest peaks on Earth, and that includes Mount Everest (8848 m), the tallest of them all.Anil Chandra Gurung, founder and Managing Director of Mountain Legend, worked with Mountain Travel for 27 years, organizing treks and tours and training guides, mostly Sherpas, in the ever-evolving techniques of modern mountain trekking.
Since 2009, Mountain Legend’s staff have guided many thousands of international clients along trekking routes all over Nepal. Some ML guides have summited Everest: one of them seven times. Fully trained in not only the fine skills of guiding and client-care along any trekking route, they are trained in medical emergencies of any kind, in any situation, at any time. The main areas for trekking in Nepal include the Khumbu (Everest) region, the huge conservation areas of Annapurna and Kanchenjonga, the northern enclaves of Mustang, Manaslu, Manang, Dolpo, Rolwaling and the Tsum Valley. Mountain Legend organizes and operates treks and trips in all of these areas,
Writing about the treks of Nepal requires a superior command of the use of extreme adjectives: stark, stunning, amazing, astounding, unforgettable, utterly beautiful and so on, because the vastly rugged terrain that one travels through in the high Himalayas inspires such extreme emotions and the trekker is constantly confronted by landscapes and scenery that defies the imagination.Brief highlights of each individual trek organized and run by Mountain Legend are given further on in this Profile.
Mountain Legend also takes clients to see the wonders of mystical Tibet, the hitherto secret enclaves of the Kingdom of Bhutan, the effervescent charm of Sikkim and the buoyance of the former British Hill Station of Darjeeling, with her famous “toy” train built a century ago by Scottish engineers.Within Nepal, apart from mountain trekking, for nature and wildlife enthusiasts, Mountain Legend also specializes in trips to the various nature sanctuaries such as Chitwan, Bardia, Koshi Tappu and Shukla Phanta in the plains areas and Rara, Shey Phuksundo, Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, Sagarmatha (Everest) and Kanchenjonga National Parks in the mountains where clients can view Nepal’s unique wild life such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, the one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants, crocodiles, more than 600 species of birds, rare butterflies (one species found at above 6000 m altitude), blue sheep, the elusive snow leopard, the shaggy high-mountain buffalo locally called yak, mountain goats, rhesus monkeys, the red Panda…...all except the Yeti, the “Abominable Snowman”, which remains a living myth. The flora and fauna of Nepal are indeed considered to be unique, not found anywhere else in the world.
During your short stay in Kathmandu (before or after trek), enjoy the additional delight of an hour-long Everest mountain flight east from the Kathmandu Valley to the Khumbu region with stunning close-up views of the world’s highest summit.
People and Nepali culture
The vast diversity of Nepal’s cultural heritage awes and inspires visitors to return again and again and the warmth and natural hospitality of the people have charmed millions over the last six and a half decades after the country was truly opened up to the rest of the world. Mountain Legend extends every opportunity for Clients to get close to the local communities of the places that they travel through, be it in the Sherpa villages, the Tharu settlements of the Terai, the tribal areas of the lower Himalayan hills where Brahmins, Chhetris, Gurungs, Tamangs, Rais, Limbus, Magars and other ethnic groups exist in their carefully maintained cultural cocoons. We believe that this gives the Client a greater satisfaction at meeting and getting to know the peoples that they meet on their trails, a greater vision of the diversity of Nepal and a deeper people-to-people understanding.
